'Ouija' Tops box office: 'John Wick' Also Bolted from the Blue
In time for the Halloween, Universal Pictures' game board thriller "Ouija" garnered the top rank, followed by Keanu Reeves' "John Wick". The Guardian revealed that the low-budget film, costing around $5 million only, falls second-biggest among the horror films released this year. Hence, it is such a big advantage to "Ouija's" producer, Jason Blum.
Next in rank, "John Wick'' approximately earned $14.15 million, including $870 in its preview and $5.45 in the opening.
The positive outcome in the box office could be attributed to the influence of the Halloween season, in which traditionally people entertain the existence of spiritual beings and the underworld. This is reinforced by Forbes report that the season has once been dominated by horror films, "Saw" and followed by "Paranormal Activity".
"Ouija" portrays the story of a group of friends who lost a member without having the chance to bid adieu. This prompted them to resort to black magic to uncover the mystery of her death.
Reviews of its trailer even hinted a not so perfect creation of a horror film. But, contrary to what is expected, "Ouija" fared excellently.
Widowed assassin Keanu Reeves again proved his prowess against the Russian mobsters in "John Wick". Fox News reported that though ranked second, the movie was tagged as a "biggest box office surprise."
Reeves, whose career went through an ordeal after a below par performance in box office of "Man of Tai" and "47 Ronin," redeemed himself after garnering positive feedbacks for "John Wick". As revealed by The Guardian, analyst Paul Dergarabedian said, "Moviegoers and people in general appreciate his candour. Major stars don't say things like that. They're too worried about their image. But his honesty resonated and audiences respect a star who is willing to talk that way." Of the $14.2 million it got, analysts said that they were expecting just half of it, so the outcome has exceeded expectations.
Forbes reported that the film also had a great time in IMAX theatres, having earned around $2.5 million. Indeed, "John Wick" has put the veteran actor of action films back on track.
