‘The Voice’ Winner Craig Wayne Boyd Shares His Inspirational Story About Not Giving Up

This year's winner of "The Voice," a televised singing contest, Craig Wayne Boyd, speaks of a time where he almost gave up his singing career. Prior to his win, Boyd was a struggling country singer finding it a challenge to break into radio. But thanks to his drummer, he persisted.
The 35-year-old Boyd moved to Nashville a decade ago from his hometown of Mesquite, Texas. He released albums two albums, one with an independent label and the other by himself. After numerous radio pitches and doing over 1,000 shows, nothing substantial opened up for Boyd.
"I remember, a little more than a year ago, sitting in a pickup outside of a club after I had played to basically no one and talking to my drummer and saying, 'Listen, I may have to quit because it's not paying my bills, and I'm losing my house.' I lost my pickup. I didn't know what I was going to do," Boyd recalls (quote via USA Today). "And him telling me, 'Dude, you can't do that.'"
Little did Boyd know, his big break was just around the corner.
"And then, randomly, the opportunity [came] up to go audition a few months out for 'The Voice,'" he says, "and I was like, 'You know what? You ought to go do that.'"
Needless to say, it worked out pretty well. As the new 'The Voice' champion, Boyd, who is the father of a toddler son, receives $100,000 and a recording contract.
"Probably one of the reasons that I had not had huge success in Nashville yet is because I always stuck to my guns," Boyd tells Nashville's Tennessean. "What's great [about] going to 'The Voice' is, I sing those songs that I would want to put on an album, and America loved that. That's what's kept me around, and I'm looking forward to the future."
