J.K. Rowling Releases New Harry Potter Short Story on Pottermore.com
July 8 was a monumental day for Muggles and wizards alike. J.K. Rowling, author of the bestselling Harry Potter series, released a 1500-word short story on the interactive Harry Potter fansite Pottermore. Fans went wild with the story, which immediately went viral and wound up being posted on various social media sites for those without membership to Pottermore.
The story is entitled "Dumbledore's Army Reunites at Quidditch World Cup." It takes the form of a gossipy report by whom else than everyone's favorite loathed reporter: Rita Skeeter. The events of the story are taking place seventeen years after the events of the seventh Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, as Harry is described as "about to turn 34." He is joined at the World Cup finals in Brazil by his fellows, among them Ron and Hermione, Harry's best friends who are now married. Skeeter reports that the friends are "no longer the fresh-faced teenagers they were in their heyday, but no less recognizable."
Skeeter's report allows fans of the much-beloved series to get a glimpse of the lives of their favorite characters, something that Potterheads have been salivating for since Rowling finished the seventh and final book of the series. However, the release of this delightful snippet of the lives of the Boy Who Lived and his cohorts does not mean that Rowling is ready to continue the series. A representative of Rowling reported that she has "no plans" of going any farther with the series; rather, the short story was merely released in order to coincide with the FIFA World Cup.
