"Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" Takes Number One Spot at The Box Office This Weekend
"Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" surpassed the hopes of even the most positive of movie critics and singlehandedly made up for the lamentably bad 4th of July weekend box office numbers. According to estimates released this evening, "Apes" brought in about $73 million in its first weekend.
This greatly outranks the earnings of its predecessor, "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," which brought in about $54.8 million in its opening weekend in 2011. This puts the "Apes" saga into a unique category of films in which the sequel exceeds the first movie in both monetary success and critical review.
Its hugely profitable opening weekend indicates that it is one of the biggest successes this summer at the box office, which have been few and far between. Most films that have debuted this summer have been greatly talked up, but have failed to deliver as far as quality goes.
Chris Aronson, head of distribution at Fox, had this comment about "Apes:" '"When you get the kind of reviews we got and the audience actually agrees, it's the kind of rare thing where critics and audiences come together and say this is a great movie." The movie's success has resulted in immediate plans for a sequel, also to be directed by Matt Reeves.
With "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" in first place at the box office for the weekend of July 11-13, "Transformers: Age of Extinction" came in second, with 16.5 million. Melissa McCarthy's "Tammy" came in third at 12.9 million.
