Bach, the famous 18th century composer would write three letters at the top of every one of his compositions: S.D.G. Soli Deo Gloria - Only to the glory of God. The idea that one of the titans of music through the centuries offered his work as a sacrifice of worship reminds us of the tradition to which we belong... and this week's Free Song might help you get into the right mindset.
Zschech writes: "I often found this phrase 'Soli Deo Gloria' on my journey through music...it's a Latin term for 'Glory to God alone' and legendary musicians such as Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel would sign off their manuscripts with this phrase again and again..declaring that their creative offerings were for the sake of praising God alone.
In a world that is becoming more and more obsessed with self and less and less concerned with the things of God, I have found myself diving into ancient songs of worship, hearing how our forerunners described the throne room of God and their dedication to His presence. My heart and soul are grappling for that deep calls unto deep' sound of worship... and it is from this place that this song has become a reality. I spoke about what I was feeling to Dustin Smith and Mitch Wong...and their talent and tenacity around the truth of worship became "Soli Deo Gloria".
All glory to God Alone.. I pray this is the signature that my life is known by..."
