Benedict Cumberbatch Stars in Biopic "The Imitation Game," Which Premieres at London Film Festival October 8
Benedict Cumberbatch stars in a new movie called "The Imitation Game," which will open at the London Film Festival on October 8. The biopic stars Cumberbatch (best known from TV's "Sherlock") as the well-known World War II codebreaker and mathematician Alan Turing.
Turing is known as the pioneer of modern-day computing, and he is also given the credit for cracking the German Enigma Code. "The Imitation Game" follows Turing and his team of highly-skilled codebreakers at Britain's top code-breaking center, Bletchley Park. The film takes place during the bleakest days of World War II and is described as "a nail-biting race against time."
Turing's code breaking is reputed to have saved thousands of lives, and contributed to the conflict of the war being ended much sooner. However, Turing was also prosecuted by the British government for being a homosexual in the early 1950s.
BFI London Film Director Clare Stewart stated, "Featuring extraordinary performances from the British talent in front of the camera and vividly directed by Morten Tyldum, The Imitation Gamedoes cinematic justice to Alan Turing's vision, determination and personal story as well as his enduring impact on British history and contemporary life."
Producer Teddy Schwarzman summed up his feelings about the film, saying, "We are truly honored that The Imitation Gamewill be opening the 58th BFI London Film Festival. The film, shot in various locations throughout England, tells the story of an incredibly gifted yet unsung British hero."
The film features an all-star cast, including Keira Knightley as fellow codebreaker Joan Clarke, as well as Rory Kinnear ("Skyfall"), Allen Leech ("Downton Abbey"), Charles Dance ("Game of Thrones"), and Matthew Goode ("A Single Man").
"The Imitation Game" opens in theaters on November 21. You can watch the trailer here.
