Matt Maher Reveals How Johnny Cash & Roy Orbison Inspired His New Song

Multi-award-winning artist and songwriter Matt Maher releases his fourth new single for 2022. "Only Good Will Grow," which features Brian Elmquist follows the recently released "The Lord's Prayer (It's Yours)," "My Old Friend" and "Leaning." The song is a prayer of blessing expressed through the deep bounds of friendship.
Maher reveals the inspiration behind this new song. "This song was inspired by the story of friendship between two musical icons --- Johnny Cash and Roy Orbison. Many don't realize they were not only label mates, they were friends and next door neighbors. This song is a benediction (a prayer of blessing) from one friend to another- in the midst of hard times and good times.
"In August of last year, I moved my whole studio into a house formerly owned by Marty Stuart (and Roy) with old and new friends to make music and life changing memories. Along the way honor the spirit of friendship and collaboration that this house seemed to embody. I had fragments of words on my phone for months....We wrote this song the first night in the house in 30 minutes.
"The story of how this all came to be is a long tug of war between self doubt and faith (in the midst of friendship). But that's another post. In the meantime, enjoy.
"This song is dedicated to the life and legacy of Joe Ritchie. I will never get to thank you this side of Heaven for your tender heart and incredible patronage, but I look forward to the day we will meet in Heaven. "
