'Ghostbusters 3' Release Date News, New All-Female Cast?
Ghostbusters 3 is currently without an official director, but Paul Feig appears to be at the top of the list. The big news though is that the Ghostbusters movie franchise could make a big shift and go to an all-female cast for Ghostbusters 3. With the death of original Ghostbuster Harold Ramis, the new movie looks to shake things up.
If the new film does center on a team of female Ghostbusters, Feig would make for a solid choice. His coming out party was his 2011 hit movie Bridesmaids, bringing in $288 million globally on a reported $32.5 million budget. Next he directed The Heat, which made $229 million on a $43 million budget. His next project, Spy, starring Melissa McCarthy in the action comedy is in post-production currently.
He also was the brilliant mind behind the short-lived series Freaks and Geeks - which centered on Linda Cardellini's angsty teenager character Lindsay Weir and her personal struggles growing up in mid-80s Michigan. So Feig loves working with female starring casts and he potentially could bring on some of his past stars to be a part of Ghostbusters 3.
The Hollywood Reporter reported that Paul Feig is now the number one candidate to take over the director's chair for Ghostbusters 3. The position opened up in March as Ivan Reitman - the filmmaker behind Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II - decided to step away following the death of original Ghostbuster Harold Ramis. Reitman will still serve as a producer and Sony is moving forward with the script they have written by Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg (though it has been altered since Ramis' passing).
Dan Aykroyd has committed to return as Dr. Raymond Stantz, however original co-star Bill Murray has said turned down the idea of returning as Dr. Peter Venkman. Ernie Hudson, who played Winston Zeddmore, is a bit of a question mark at this stage, as he was quoted saying, "There can't be another Ghostbusters without Harold."
So there are many things still up in the air, but Ghostbusters 3 still hopes start production at the start of 2015. Sony has not yet set a release date but it is assumed it will release to theaters sometime in 2016.
