Doctor Strange Movie Release Date, News, Rumors and Updates: New Marvel Film Reportedly Not at Origin Story
Marvel's Doctor Strange is getting its own film in 2016 and it's been reported that a new script is being penned by writer Jon Spaihts (Prmoetheus) and now won't be an origin story for the sorcerer supreme. A script has already been written last year but now Marvel and Disney has scrapped that in favor of a new one. This could have been a move motivated by the apparent leak of the script a year ago.
The new screenplay will have Doctor Strange as an established superhero. According to BadassDigest editor Devin Faraci, also the man responsible for a few Star Wars Episode VII spoilers last week, that Marvel's previously written script for Doctor Strange would have included Baron Mordo as the main antagonist. He also explains that Marvel will no longer make origin films for its next set of superheroes heading into Phase Three of the cinematic universe.
On the Meet the Movie Press podcast Faraci explains, "Marvel's new thing is no more origin stories. So, Dr. Strange movie no longer has an origin. It begins in medias res. It has Dr. Strange already established as the Sorcerer Supreme. It is a totally new script."
This has not yet been confirmed by Marvel and Disney.
Doctor Strange is a former neurosurgeon who becomes the Sorcerer Supreme to battle magical and mythical that threaten the Earth. He begins as an arrogant man and becomes an enlightened and driven sorcerer with a purpose.
With the old script being scrapped by Marvel, it is still unclear who would replace Baron Mordo as the main villain of the film.
As with most superhero film franchises, their first film spends about half the movie showing the audiences the reason how and why they became superheroes. Unlike Spider-Man or Batman, Doctor Strange isn't really that well-known to mass audiences, and not having his origin story might confuse or alienate them. To comic book fans however, they might not have that as an issue.
No official casting has been announced. Doctor Strange is currently under development and will be directed by Scott Derrickson for a 2016 release date.
