'The Blacklist' Season 2 NBC Release Date Fall 2014, Cast Adds Pee-wee Herman (Paul Reubens) for Multiple Episodes
"The Blacklist" Season 2 is just under a month away from its premiere and executive producer Jon Bokenkamp has revealed that Paul Reubens will be joining the cast for multiple episodes.
Paul Reubens is best known for his role as Pee-wee Herman in the children's television show Pee-wee's Playhouse and the film Pee-wee's Big Adventure from Tim Burton.
Reubens character will portray "a dapper, finicky 'muscle' who handles delicate situations in the criminal underworld." His character will first appear in the second episode.
"It's going to be something totally different, and it's going to be awesome," executive producer Jon Bokenkamp said in an Entertainment Weekly interview. "It can't get strange enough for me. One of the most fun things is being able to write for actors who I've admired and think are interesting and try to play against expectations. I'd say he's gonna shake things up a bit when he enters Red's orbit."
"It started with the character," he shared. "We knew what he would feel like and sound like, and then as we started kicking around names, Paul's name came up as, 'Well, that would be cool. That will never happen, but we might as well ask.'"
"The Blacklist" Season 2 premieres September 22 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.
Reubens also has reportedly striking a deal with Judd Apatow to bring back Pee-wee's character.
Another Pee-Wee movie is in the works. "Short of something unforeseen like the studio going out of business, I think it's very likely both these projects will happen next year," the actor said at the time.
The script for the movie was written by Reubens and I Love You Beth Cooper star Paul Rust. Pee-Wee did have a character in a small role in The Smurfs 2. "My theory is that it's because of the times. Jokey Smurf in the cartoon would carry around a package that was a bomb. He'd give it other Smurfs as a present and then it would blow up. He's a victim of the times," Paul Ruebens explained.
