Charlie Hunnam Declined 50 Shades of Grey - Kurt Sutter Hinted the Reason
Charlie Hunnam was actually the first choice to play Christian Grey Role in 50 Shades of Grey. But he eventually declined the role. Charlie Hunnam accent and height would have made a believable Christian Grey in the movie but apparently that is all just a women's dream now.
The Charlie Hunnam tweet from author E.L. James read as follows, "I wish Charlie all the best."
Official Reason
In an International Business Times post, Universal Pictures issued an official statement regarding Charlie Hunnam's dropping the 50 Shades of Grey role. It read, "The filmmakers of FIFTYY SHADES OF GREY and Charlie Hunnam have agreed to find another male lead given Hunnam's immersive TV schedule which is not allowing him time to adequately prepare for the role of Christian Grey."
The Real Reason
In a Deadline interview, SOA creator Kurt Sutter hinted the most likely reason. He said, "Yeah I had conversations with Charlie, when he was offered that role. The advice I gave him was what he knew. It has to be what is on the page. I don't know any of this for a fact. I think he was promised a certain level...not collaboration, but excellence with the script. And that never materialized."
In the same, interview he added, "Newcomers have less to lose by putting themselves out there in an S&M love story about a damaged guy who seems perfect but cannot handle intimacy with his partner."
