Black.ish Release Date, Reveals, Reviews, Plot and Rumors: New Show Coming to ABC, what to Expect
If you are old enough to remember the Cosby show and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air from the first time they aired then Black.ish is the show for you. This Black American sitcom while being, well, a sitcom addresses important socio economic issues in the black community. The best thing about it is that we shall be seeing new faces. The spring -winter season brings with it a lot of sitcoms aimed at 'minority' viewers and black.ish seems to have joined the bandwagon. The show is set to begin airing on Wednesday September 24th at 9:30.
The show is about a black American man, Dre, who has done well for himself and is married to a mixed race anesthesiologist woman. Needless to say this family is not living in the trenches. And so now that this family is black and successful Dre feels that he needs to instill a sense of cultural identity in his children aided by his tracksuit wearing father. So this is where important questions that were asked in The Cosby Show and Fresh Prince come up: Cant a black man just be rich? Must his identity be sacrificed at the altar of wealth? And what is this black cultural identity anyway? His wife insists that they can raise their children in a color blind society. Which is all well and good until their son asks for a Bar Mitzvah (very Carlton-like). Their daughter on the other hand equates success to material possessions (Hillary is that you?). And their twin six year olds seem to be the only 'normal' ones (and there is Ashley).
One of the best things about this show has to be Tracee Ellis Ross, whom I think is very talented and we all missed since Girlfriends. Dre is played by Anthony Anderson who has had quite a few of his sitcoms cancelled so we hope he brings his A game this time. The other really good thing is that Laurence Fishburne shall be playing Dre's father. Yes that's right, Morpheus himself! If the writers do not find a way to write a joke about a red pill into the scrip then I just don't know why we should watch this show. Black.ish is clearly a show to mark our calendars for.
