Back Trail: Rob Thomas talks about Veronica Mars' Heartbreaking Journey
Ten years ago, the then newcomer Kristen Bell starred as Veronica Mars on a series about a teenage private eye who solves crimes including the murder of her best friend. Back then, the show wasn't hitting the top of the charts. As a matter of fact, the show had been cancelled, but then it resurfaced seven years later as a movie which became a blockbuster including a book tie-in.
According to the man responsible for the creation of Veronica Mars, the journey had indeed been tough. Veronica Mars' far-fetched dream at the time is to beat the iconic Nancy Drew and become a new icon in pop culture. She doesn't have superpowers but she is relatable at some way and she openly speaks her mind.
Rob shared two of his unforgettable battles with the production team. The first one being cutting out the scene where Veronica was being raped, some felt that it was just too dark. He won the battle though as the show did air it. According to him, it is a vital story point in which Veronica became who she is. There is also that one time when they begged him to let Veronica keep her relationship with her father. At that point, the heroine had been raped, lost her mother, her best friend was murdered and heart broken by her boyfriend. Rob listened and said he was glad he did, because having that little light in the show had kept fans along.
On Veronica's shift from high school to college, although Rob admits having a few proud episodes, he wondered if the jump led to losing the show's magic touch, after all she was meant to be a high school private eye. Then the show was cancelled, and Rob didn't know if that would be the last of Veronica Mars.
Fortunately he got Warner Bros to produce the movie, in the condition that he find the way to get the funds, and so he did. The movie became a success and since then, Veronica Mars had become a legacy that Thomas is very much proud of.
Rob Thomas continues to keep her alive through his writing and maybe if the universe permits, we'll get to see her again in the big screen.
