Android One smartphones now available in India
India has welcomed the release of Android One-branded smartphones.
The launch comes less than a month after the introduction of two Firefox-based smartphones.
To make it more affordable, the Android One smartphones have the minimum specifications set by Google, made with components sourced locally. These are:
-
A 4.5 inch (11.4cm) display
-
1GB of RAM
-
A 5MP rear and a 2MP front camera
-
Mediatek quadcore processor
-
Android OS support
A micro-SD slot, a replaceable battery, a built-in FM radio, and dual SIM features have been added to cater to local preferences.
Original equipment manufacturers can select parts manufactured in India, which saves time in terms of hardware identification, as well as software testing.
This scheme would soon roll out in Indonesia, Philippines, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka.
Google has also tied up with local network Airtel to cut down on the costs of Android apps and updates. Airtel offers its subscribers free Android updates within the first six months of their contracts, as well as 200MB worth of apps from Google Play.
Because of these factors, Android One smartphones could retail for as low as 6,399 rupees ($105; £65).
Three Indian companies have released the first Android One handsets, all aiming to deliver quality, Internet connected smartphones at an affordable price point.
According to PricewaterhouseCoopers, approximately 400 million smartphones will be sold in India by 2019. Only one in 10 Indians own a smartphone at present.
