'School of Rock' Nickelodeon Series 2015, Cast News: Comedian Tony Cavalero Named as Jack Black Replacement
"School of Rock" is coming back a decade later in the form of a new series on Nickelodeon. The hit 2003 movie starred Jack Black and will follow the same premise, but it has just been made official that comedian Tony Cavalero will be replacing Black's role as Dewey Finn for the upcoming series.
"The adventures and misadventures of Dewey Finn, a down-on-his-luck rocker who poses as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school as he teaches his eccentric, unconventional and overachieving students to play and love rock 'n' roll," according to The Hollywood Reporter.
"With Dewey's outrageous personality and rock star sensibilities taking center stage, "School of Rock" will be an irresistibly fun show for the whole family," Paramount TV president Amy Powell shared.
Cavalero has made appearances on "Modern Family" and "2 Broke Girls" and performs regularly with The Groundlings in Los Angeles.
The new "School of Rock" series will have a 13-episode first season on Nickelodeon. The cast for the upcoming series will continue to be revealed, with production set to begin in the Fall and the show set for a spring 2015 premiere. Jim and Steve Armogida (Crash & Bernstein, My Family) are on board as writers, exec producers and showrunners. Original School of Rock director Richard Linklater and producer Scott Rudin will return to exec produce the Nick series.
Paramount TV is stretching their scope into kids programming for the first with the new series. "School of Rock is one of those great movies that always felt quintessentially Nickelodeon in its tone and humor, and we jumped at the opportunity to partner with Paramount Television and bring it to life as a TV series," said Russell Hicks, president of content and development at Nick.
School of Rock has grossed more than $131 million worldwide since its release in October 2003 and has become a recent cult classic type of movie.
This is Nickelodeon's second addition this week, already adding "100 Things to Do". The pickup comes less than a month after "Sam & Cat" was canceled after a fallout between co-stars Jennette McCurdy and Ariana Grande.
