Luke Wilson to play Roger Goodell while Will Smith as Bennet Omalu in a film that tackles CTE in football players
Luke Wilson, is said to be in negotiations to play Roger Goodell in a NFL movie about NFL's concussion problem. The Legally Blonde star will star alongside Bad Boys Will Smith, who will play Bennet Omalu in the said movie.
The film will be directed by award winning, Gladiator director, Ridley Scott.
Aside from Wilson and Smith, they will be joined by Alec Baldwin, Albert Brooks, Gugu Mbatha Raw, Paul Reiser, David Morse, Arliss Howard and is said to be an ensemble cast, according to The Washington Post.
The film would be based from a GQ article by Jeanne Marie Laskas titled "Game Brain". Smith's character is the neuropathologist who was the first one to diagnose on the first case related to CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy) among professional football players.
Mike Webster will be played by David Morse. Webster was an ex-Pittsburgh Steelers center, whose autopsy shows the appearance of CTE. NFL neurologist Joseph Maroon will be played by Howard.
It has been speculated that Webster's ailments were due to wear and tear sustained over his playing career; some doctors estimated he had been in the equivalent of "25,000 automobile crashes" in over 25 years of playing football at the high school, college and professional levels.
According to synopsis by Slash Film: "Wilson's Goodell is the incoming NFL commissioner who reacts by convening a summit to investigate the medical matter. (GQ notes Omalu was not invited to the event.) Eventually Goodell comes to acknowledge the connection between football and CTE, and donates lots of money to scientific research."
Roger Goodell was the one who headlined the lawsuit regarding accusations made to the league of not doing any preventive measures for NFL players' head injuries. The lawsuit was amicably settled at the sum of $756million.
